Notre Dame 8, Pekin 0
Soccer setback
PEORIA -- Pekin kept state power Notre Dame off the scoreboard for the first 15 minutes, but the powerful Irish eventually rolled to an 8-0 Mid-State 6 Conference girls' soccer victory Tuesday night.
"Early on I think we gave a great showing," said Pekin coach Edgar Sandoval. "We had a couple runs up into their side of the field despite going into the wind. We just lost some steam after their first goal."
Lucy Hedges scored at the 15:30 mark and again on a breakaway five minutes later. Three more minutes passed before Hedges notched a hat trick.
"Lucy Hedges is an ODP player (Olympic Development Program) which means she's one of the top 25 players in the state at her age," Sandoval added. "She's obviously tough to keep up with."
The Irish held the Dragons without a shot while Pekin goalkeepers Jen Adkison and Bethany Smith combined for ten saves.
For the second straight year, a referee had to stop the game and warn a group of Notre Dame fans who were yelling racial slurs and sexually explicit comments towards the Pekin players.
"It's not sour grapes. It really isn't,'' Sandoval said. "They have one of the best soccer programs in the state and we know that. But year after year nothing is done about these fans and from what the ref said, it happens at all of their home games. Coach Blackford apologized to me and some of our girls after the game, but it's the same every year."
